Dear Di-ary….

Question: What were your hobbies growing up?

From: Anonymous

I have had many “hobbies” over the years growing up.  I think your hobbies change as you mature and grow….but some always stay with you.

When I was young I enjoyed going fishing with my Dad. My younger brother would come too, but after being in the boat for a while he got bored quickly and wanted to go back in especially if we weren’t catching anything! Not me! I’d sit out there with my Dad for hours and enjoy the peace and tranquility…..regardless if “we were catching fish” or not.

Upon entering hight school I discovered Home Economics!  And I loved it!  I loved learning how to sew, bake and cook.  My Mom and I baked a lot together so I already had some skills.  But this class really started my love of sewing, baking and cooking of which I still enjoy today!  I loved making some of my own clothes, matching dresses for the girls when they were growing up, pillows, quilts and much more.

Everyone has different gifts and talents given to them by God and I believe we should use these gifts and talents to give back.  Over the years I have baked many cakes and cookies for bake sales at our church or to give out to our seniors around the holidays.  I am also in our “Prayer Quilt Ministry “ which is a group of parishioners who sew lap quilts to give to those in need of prayer.

I’ve also enjoyed sharing/teaching my grandchildren some of these things too. So many of the skills that we learned are not being passed down to the younger generation. It’s important that they learn so they can hopefully pass them down too!  Whether you like to sew, knit, crochet, paint, fish, bowl, sing, draw, dance, hunt or raise chickens…whatever it is…pass down all your knowledge and expertise to your children and grandchildren.

Each of these hobbies have given me much joy over the years! I have shown all my grandchildren how to sew and bake….boys included!  To my surprise they enjoyed learning and hopefully they will remember the fun times we had….but most of all I hope that they will share their skills, no matter what they are, with their children/grandchildren.

Think about the hobbies you enjoy and share them with your family too!
