I’m afraid of a lot of things. Spiders. Heights….having to go back on a dating app. (Girl…am I wrong?) But for some reason God made me oddly comfortable speaking in front of people. Granted, in the beginning I was frozen with fear. Being funny by accident was one thing. Being funny on demand is another. But after years of practice and failure, I find myself in a unique place of being the center of a predominately female audience online.
As a comic, I perform in clubs that still play mostly men. When I host conferences, often I’m the only woman on the stage, even in organizations that are predominately female. I’m a firm believer that I’m comfortable on stage because I’ve spent a lifetime onstage performing. Practicing. Perfecting.
In the last few weeks I’ve spent an arduous amount of time creating an online class and open mic night that launches March 12th. The classes are small groups that learn public speaking through skill sets found in the arts, meaning it will be fun! You’ll learn to be in the moment and lean into improv instead of feeling like you have to “BE” a formal speaker or “LOOK” a certain way.
Our open mics are a place to come and work out….anything. Poetry, written work, comedy, a story about your day. Nothing formal. Nothing perfected. It’s not your audition for late night. Expect that it will be uncomfortable. Expect that you might say something silly, or have your face do that twitchy thing. It will. But if you keep practicing, it will calm down. You will calm down.
I want to make learning and practicing public speaking to be accessible. I want it to be fun. I want to create a community of people willing to put themselves out there and feel safe. No judgement.
Maybe you’re the person that has been waiting for something like this to try. Maybe you’re the person who breaks into a sweat just thinking about it.

When is the last time you did something for you? Something scary? Something outside your comfort zone? Maybe you never volunteer to perform a piece but surrounding yourself with people who are doing bold things inspires you in another way.
